Families facing food insecurity often struggle to find enough to eat when children are home on the weekends. With this in mind, TEEG approached organizations in the towns of Woodstock, Pomfret, and Thompson to create a Weekend Food Program.
Woodstock was the first program established with the Evangelical Covenant Church and F.R.E.S.H. providing weekly distribution to families. Soon after the Thompson Business association stepped up to sponsor the program in their community. This fall, Christ Church and the Pomfret School will team up to support the program to serve families through the Pomfret Community School.
Each of these teams collects, organizes packages and distribute food each week to families in the program by providing a bag of “kid-friendly” food each Friday. TEEG outreaches to families by inserting additional information about support services in the bags. The Woodstock team served up to 75 families a week last year and our data shows that those families are finding their way to TEEG, where they can access the tools they need to balance budgets and stabilize family income.
